Worm Composting
Providing vibrant soil is FoodCycles' raison d'étre.
Vermicomposting or "worm" composting is one way that we keep food nutrients from being wasted in landfill sites.
We sprinkle vermicompost around crops to cultivate hardy plants that produce succulent vegetables. We also brew the vermicompost in our compost tea and apply it as a foliar spray to promote health since the nutrients are much easier to absorb.
Our greenhouse holds a system of 8, 4' x 4' worm bins. We are reaching capacity and will be building an additional 8 bin set in 2011.
WHY WORM COMPOST?
Here are some quick facts about castings and their benefits.
A little dab will do ya, a spoonful of castings has 50% more organic matter than soil that has not passed through a worms digestive tract.
The nutrient content in 1 teaspoon can feed a 6" potted plant for 2 months.
Plants absorb nutrients from castings easily and immediately.
Because of the texture of castings, it is able to retain water for plants.
